Dreaming of cooler weather? Prepare for a great fall in the garden

Fall in the Sacramento region is a gardener’s best friend, still warm enough to plant and not yet too wet.
A number of upcoming workshops offer help on getting the most out of your fall garden. Mark your calendar for these events:



2nd Saturday with Barry
9-11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 11. This regular Open Garden Day will include a discussion of planting cole crops (such as broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, kale and mustard). Fall and Winter Vegetables

Fall in Love With Gardening
10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 18.
The UCCE Master Gardeners of Placer County present a workshop on preparing your garden for fall.
Topics include composting, mulching, sheet mulching, and cover crops. Auburn Senior Center, 550 High St., Auburn. Pre-register by emailing krmarini@ucanr.edu.

Learn & Shop: Preparing Your Garden for Fall
10 a.m.-noon, Tuesday, Sept. 18.
The UC Davis Arboretum Teaching Nursery’s manager,
Join Taylor Lewis, presents a master class on how to prepare your garden for fall.
The first 90 minutes will be an exclusive session as Lewis shares tips and techniques
to take advantage of the fall planting season.
Participants then receive a private shopping experience in the nursery.

Fall Planting for Spring Color
9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Oct. 20.
The Master Gardeners of Sacramento County offer a class on growing bulbs in containers, bulb forcing, and a presentation by Bill the Bulb Baron, Santa Cruz hybridizer and grower. Bulbs also will be available for sale.
Registration is $35 per person.
Registration starts Aug. 4 at Harvest Day and on the website.
