Annual sale offers bargains on unusual irises

Sacramento Iris Society hosts this great opportunity to add beautiful drought-resistant flowers to your garden

Looking for a low-water, easy-care plant with loads of flower power? Bearded irises offer years of color without much effort or expense. Another plus: They're (almost) deerproof, too. And new re-blooming varieties bloom in spring and fall.

Here's your chance to get irises like you've never seen before. The Sacramento Iris Society will host its annual rhizome sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, July 14 and 15, at the Shepard Garden and Arts Center, 3330 McKinley Blvd., Sacramento. Admission is free.

Hundreds of freshly dug rhizomes will be available for purchase. Experts will be on hand to offer advice including how to plant irises. A labeling station allows buyers to make their own permanent garden labels for every iris purchased. Find irises in a dazzling assortment of unusual colors (such as this stunning bronze, above right) as well as bi- and tricolored bloomers.
