Event: Cemetery explores wild side of Sacramento

July 28 special evening tour recounts 'City of Saloons' tales

On a balmy July evening, Sacramento's Historic City Cemetery can be a cool place to chill out. And if some of its residents had been a little more chill, they would not have ended up where they are (at least not when and how they did).

That's one of the themes of an upcoming special evening tour, "Saloons of the Wild, Wild West," at 7 p.m. Saturday, July 28.

In the early days of the cemetery, Sacramento was a wild and crazy town, packed with bars and rowdy patrons. Mark Twain dubbed Sacramento "City of Saloons," because the drinking establishments outnumbered most others.

That helped inspire this tour, which will cover cocktails (and cocktail makers), deadly barroom brawls, the origin of the free lunch, why Sacramento saloons had separate women's entrances, and more. Meet interesting characters as the cemetery comes to life to tell these Sacramento stories and get some exercise, too. Wear sensible shoes.

As  a bonus, see the cemetery's famous gardens in the cool of the evening. (But no alcohol will be served.) Tickets are $10 and must be purchased in advance. For details: www.brownpapertickets.com/event/3468174.
