Dispose of pesticides the safe way

Facilities open to accept hazardous waste

As seasons change, it’s time to do a little fall home and garden cleaning. That includes getting rid of unneeded or leftover pesticides.

These chemical concoctions can expire, potentially causing more harm than good. They’re also dangerous to leave hanging around the house or the garage. (They’re called hazardous for a reason.)

Don’t pour them down the drain or dump them in the trash. Instead, safely dispose of pesticides as well as other chemicals at Sacramento’s Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) facilities.

These facilities are now open and accepting HHW. Hours and days may vary; check websites or call before your trip for latest updates.

Local HHW facilities include:

* North Area Recovery Station, 4450 Roseville Road, North Highlands, 916-875-5555, sacgreenteam.com.

* Sacramento Recycling and Transfer Station. 8491 Fruitridge Road, Sacramento, 311 or 916-264-5011, sacrecycle.org.

* Elk Grove Special Waste Collection Center, 9255 Disposal Lane, Elk Grove, 916-627-3232, elkgrovecity.org/recycle.
